NEW ROADS — A 19-year-old mother has been arrested and charged with murder after her one-month-old son died on Monday, April 14.
On Thursday, April 17, the grandmother was also arrested.
It was around 9:30 a.m. on April 14th when officials responded to a home on Pennsylvania St. for a medical call. That’s when they found the one-month-old baby and rushed him to a local hospital. The baby did not survive his injuries.
New Roads Police Chief Louis Hamilton says when they were questioning the infant’s mother, Ke’iondra Butler, “there were inconsistencies on what had happened.”
It’s why Chief Hamilton contacted the Louisiana State Police crime lab to process the scene.
“We acquired additional evidence that led us to believe she was being untrue with her statements. She was interviewed and processed into the Pointe Coupee Parish jail last night,” said Chief Hamilton.
She is now charged with second-degree murder and felony obstruction of justice. Her bond has been set at $550,000. Butler’s mother, Tamika Butler, 41, is charged with indecent behavior with juveniles and cruelty to juveniles. Details surrounding the grandmother’s arrest have not been released at this.
An autopsy on the baby will help officials learn the cause and manner of death.
Ke’iondra Butler does have one other child, older than the one-month-old, who is now in the Department of Child & Family Services’ custody.
