BATON ROUGE – BRPD Officer Gabe Walters and his wife Tai unexpectedly lost their young son Cason in January. A give-back benefit for Cason Walters is taking place all day on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at two different locations of New York Bagel in Baton Rouge to help the family with medical and burial costs.
Cason was born on Sept. 19, 2016 weighing just one pound and one ounce. He was only 10 inches long. He was a “micro-premie” baby and spent just under one year in the NICU: 356 days. He later spent over a month in the PICU.
He unexpectedly passed away on Jan. 10, 2025 at the age of eight years old.
Cason was a student at Tanglewood Elementary in Central. He was known for being filled with joy and love, and his adventurous nature.
According to his family, Cason loved fire trucks and first responder vehicles, which was a reflection of his “adventurous spirit and awe for bravery and heroism.” His favorite toys included a yellow hammer and a jet, and some of his favorite moments were spent outside, video calling family and friends, and spending time watching videos on his iPad.
Cason had many family members who love and miss him, and will “embrace life’s miracles, persevere through challenges, and find joy in every precious moment” to continue to honor his life and legacy.

How to help Cason’s family
It’s why there is a benefit in honor of Cason Walters. On Feb. 19th, 20% of proceeds at New York Bagel (the Highland Road and Perkins Road Baton Rouge locations) will go toward the Walters family. The give-back event is happening all day.
For those unable to make it to Wednesday’s event but still want to help the family, a GoFundMe has been set up. This will also help with medical and burial expenses.
