BATON ROUGE — Starting on Jan. 7, 2025, Calandro’s Supermarket on Perkins Road will now operate under the ownership of Oak Point Fresh Markets. After 84 years of serving the Greater Baton Rouge community, the Calandro family is transitioning ownership to another well-known, local grocery family.
For 24 years, Calandro’s has been at its well-known Perkins Road location. The Calandro family made this decision to partner with the Sumich family of Oak Point Fresh Markets because of their shared commitment to quality, community and treating employees like family — values that have made Oak Point trusted names in local grocery retail.
Oak Point Fresh Markets was founded in the early 1950s by Matthew and Willie Sumich in Buras, Louisiana. It currently has two locations: one in Watson and one in Central, with the Perkins Road store becoming its third storefront.
Oak Point Fresh Markets operates with the motto, “Love Where You Shop”, and the Sumich family extends this philosophy to their employees: “Love Where You Work” because we love where we live. This dedication reflects the family and company’s mission to serve the St. George and South Baton Rouge with the same passion and excellence they bring to their current locations.
The Calandro family will continue to serve the Baton Rouge community at their original location in Mid-City at 4142 Government Street.
The Sumich family and Oak Point Fresh Markets are honored to continue the Calandro family’s legacy of excellence at the Perkins location. Oak Point plans to maintain many of the product selections established customers have come to know and love while introducing unique items and services that are signature to the Oak Point stores.
Both families are committed to a smooth transition for customers and employees. The Calandro’s and Oak Point teams are working together to provide job opportunities for the Calandro’s Perkins staff as part of the transition.
