GALVEZ —- An off-duty Ascension Parish sheriff’s deputy died in a two-vehicle crash while on his motorcycle.
Joshua Dunaway, 40, of Prairieville, died in the crash. He had worked for the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office as a motorman.
It was around 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14 when Louisiana State Police troopers responded to the crash on LA 44, just north of Lee Drive in Galvez in Ascension Parish.
The investigation so far shows that Dunaway was driving north on LA 44 on a 2024 Suzuki motorcycle. At the same time, a 2024 GMC Sierra had just turned right off of Lee Drive onto LA 44 northbound. For reasons still under investigation, Dunaway crashed into the back of the Sierra.
Unfortunately, he died on the scene. Troopers say he was wearing a DOT-approved helmet.
The driver of the GMC was properly buckled and was not injured. Impairment is unknown at this time. Per procedure, routine toxicology samples were collected.
Dunaway had been with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office since April 2024. APSO did issue a statement to their social media page:
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Deputy Joshua Dunaway, a dedicated member of the Ascension Parish Sheriffs Office Motors Division. Joshua was more than a coworker to many of us, he was a friend, a teammate, and a loving father who cared deeply for his family.
His loss is felt across our entire agency. We ask that you keep Joshua’s family, friends, and his APSO family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Funeral arrangements will be shared once they are finalized.
