Off-duty Baton Rouge Police officer issued summons for DWI & driving nearly 100 mph

BATON ROUGE — A Baton Rouge Police officer is on restricted duty after she was placed on leave while an internal affairs investigation is underway from a DWI summons.

Officer Sabrione Reed, who has been with BRPD for nearly five years, was issued a summons last week after she was allegedly driving under the influence and speeding, BRPD said.

Baton Rouge Police confirmed to UWK that officers were running radar on May 30 around 12:30 a.m. on Interstate 12 near the Sherwood Forest Blvd. exit when Reed blew past them going nearly 100 mph. Officers eventually got behind the driver in Denham Springs when Reed pulled over on the shoulder of I-12 between the Denham & Juban exits. She was off-duty at the time of the incident and not in her police unit.

Her blood alcohol content came back just over the legal limit at .09%.

The Baton Rouge officer was issued a summons for a first-offense DWI, reckless driving, fleeing to elude, and speeding. Standard procedure for most law enforcement on a first-offense DWI is a summons, which is considered an arrest, but does not involve anyone being booked into parish prison with a mugshot.

Officer Reed was placed on administrative leave, but that has since been changed to restricted duty. Meanwhile, BRPD has launched an internal affairs investigation into the officer to determine if she violated any of the department’s policies or procedures.

“We issued the summons to our own officer, as we would to anyone else on these charges. No one is above the law, especially not officers. It’s why we’ve now launched an internal affairs investigation into this officer. Matters involving my own men and women are taken very seriously and investigated to the fullest extent,” Chief T.J. Morse said.
