BATON ROUGE —- Baton Rouge Police and U.S. Marshals have arrested a man accused of killing a 23-year-old man the day after they had a fist fight, arrest records show. He was booked into parish prison on June 2.
William Hills was found shot in an SUV on Beechwood Street near Evangeline Street about 5:35 p.m. on March 29, police said. He later died from his injuries.
Investigators learned that Hills and 32-year-old Edward Whitten had a fist fight on Brady Street the previous day.
Whitten’s arrest warrant said he was looking for Hills earlier on the day of the shooting and had an assault rifle. He went to a house where he believed Hills might be, but Hills wasn’t there, the warrant said.
Later that day, police got a call about a disturbance with weapons. Police say Whitten had an assault rifle and was the passenger in a gray car at that time, the warrant said. Detectives used Flock license plate readers and surveillance video to track the gray car and Hills’ SUV, the warrant said.
“The victim and the suspect’s vehicle were less than a minute apart and they were both traveling northbound on Beechwood Street. Shortly after, the victim was shot at the intersection of Beechwood Street and Evangeline Street. Shell casings on scene matched the same caliber assault weapon Edward possessed when he went looking for the victim shortly before the shooting,” the warrant said.
On June 2, Whitten was booked into Parish Prison on charges of second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of domestic violence battery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The same weekend in March, two people were injured in an apparently unrelated shooting on Louise Street and another person was injured in a shooting at Benny’s Car Wash on Airline Highway.
