Shortly before 9am Sunday Aug. 1, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic violence scene off Perkins Rd. on John Newcombe Ave. in south Baton Rouge.
East Baton Rouge deputies say Aaron Morgan, 28, stabbed and killed his grandmother, Dianne Gafford, 78, and stabbed his mother, who is in stable condition. Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said the suspect then stole his grandmother’s car and possibly a weapon from that home and drove out to Highland Market. That’s where officials say he shot three people in an attempt to steal their vehicles. One of the vehicles had two people in it and another had one person in it. All three people were shot. Officials say all three people are expected to survive.
“Thank God this happened right here by the Ochsner Urgent Care because people here at Ochsner Urgent Care rendered aid to all of these individuals and they’ve all been transported to a local hospital. We think they are all in stable condition is the last word we had,” said Sheriff Gautreaux.
Meanwhile, the suspect did get away with one person’s vehicle and fled law enforcement. That’s when Sheriff Gautreaux said they spotted the suspect on Siegen Lane and got into a chase following him to the Bluebonnet/Jefferson area. That’s where he’s said to have jumped out of his vehicle.
Sheriff Gautreaux said the suspect did point his gun at deputies at which times deputies shot and hit the suspect twice. The sheriff said it’s unsure right now whether the suspect actually shot at deputies. The suspect is expected to survive and is in custody.
The suspect will be charged with his grandmother’s murder as well as the other shootings once he is released from the hospital.
In total, one person has died, and five additional people are injured including the suspect.
