ADDIS — Officers arrested a Baton Rouge man after a high-speed pursuit through Addis and Brusly in West Baton Rouge Parish on Sunday night.
It was just before 10 p.m. when an Addis police officer attempted to stop a white Kia Optima that was headed south on La 1 for a headlight that was out. Addis Police Chief Jason Langlois said the officer tried to stop the driver, Brandon Burrell, on La 1 near the Addis/Plaquemine line.
“It was a simple traffic stop. The guy sped up when the (police) lights came on. It went down to the Dow tracks, stayed in West Baton Rouge and by the tracks, it made an illegal left turn, flipped around to go northbound, hit the median a few times, hit speeds close to 100 mph and at one point, it went north in the southbound lanes and then came across the median,” Chief Langlois told UWK.
Near Benedetto’s, Burrell, 31, is said to have hit a culvert and crashed his car, which ended the pursuit. His car’s airbag did deploy, but Burrell was not injured in the crash. There were no other injuries or vehicles involved in the pursuit or crash.
Burrell was arrested and charged with aggravated flight from an officer, aggravated obstruction of a highway of commerce, felony possession of marijuana and possession of schedule II along with multiple traffic charges. Burrell is accused of having nearly 60 Oxycodone pills without a proper prescription.
The pursuit lasted roughly four miles on La 1 and Chief Langlois said he’s absolutely aware of how people in West Baton Rouge feel when it comes to pursuits.
“This is a time of the night when there weren’t many drivers on the roads. It all happened pretty fast and ended fast after he crashed his own vehicle. Don’t be stupid. If he had just pulled over, half this stuff would not have even happened,” said Chief Langlois.
