BATON ROUGE — An overnight shooting in Baton Rouge on Monday has left one man dead and another man has been arrested. The shooting happened around 2:16 a.m. Monday in the 11,000 block of Longridge Avenue near South Sherwood Forest.
On Tuesday, June 24th, Baton Rouge Police Homicide detectives and U.S. Marshals arrested 27-year-old Eriq Overstreet. He is charged with second degree murder.
According to Baton Rouge Police, the shooting stemmed from a verbal argument between two individuals, one of which was identified as Overstreet. During the argument, one of the individuals, identified as 27-year-old Marion Griffin, was shot. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators say that Overstreet fled the scene before officers arrived. While details surrounding the motive remain unclear, authorities say a 25-year-old was involved in the incident, though their exact role has not yet been determined.
Despite this latest fatal shooting and the shooting over the weekend that left five injured and one dead, Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse says that shootings and violent crime remain down compared to this time last year.
