Plaquemine police chase: Fleeing vehicle crashes into pick-up | One dead, two injured

PLAQUEMINE — Louisiana State Police has taken over the investigation into a deadly crash in West Baton Rouge Parish after a high-speed police chase involving a Plaquemine officer. A 34-yr-old from Plaquemine died in the crash, Jonathan K. Williams, per LSP.

Plaquemine Police Chief Stephen Engolio tells UWK there was an ongoing domestic incident involving a man and a woman. Earlier in the week, the man allegedly broke a window in her car attempting to get to her. She called police. On April 13, Chief Engolio says the man allegedly broke another window trying to get to her again. The same woman called law enforcement again. When a Plaquemine police officer noticed the vehicle that was described by the woman, a 2007 Chevy Tahoe, they attempted to stop it but the driver fled leading to the police chase.

That started the pursuit around 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 heading north on La 1. The fleeing vehicle, that had a driver (Williams) and passenger in it, reached speeds upwards of 90 mph passing through Addis and Brusly in West Baton Rouge Parish.

As the officer approached Brusly, he notified his supervisor there was traffic there and they decided to terminate the pursuit. As his officer was beginning to slow down, State Police says Williams blew through a red light and crashed into the front end of a Dodge Ram. That crash caused the fleeing vehicle to flip. The Plaquemine officer did not hit anyone, per Chief Engolio.

The crash happened near American Way in front of Spillway Sportman in Port Allen. Officials confirm to UWK that Williams was not buckled and hence was ejected and died. The passenger in that vehicle was able to crawl out. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the pick-up had minor injuries and was alert and talking to officers at the scene.

Louisiana State Police will take over the investigation.

*UWK is making an editorial decision to blur the vehicle involved in the crash at this time.*
