WALKER, LA – Just over a year ago, two cousins—bound by love and now by a shared kidney—underwent a journey that forever changed their lives.
In April 2023, then-20-year-old Emily Sofranec was a college freshman at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette when her health took a sudden and devastating turn. What began as fatigue and recurring sicknesses quickly escalated into soaring blood pressure and a diagnosis of kidney failure. With her kidneys shutting down, Emily urgently needed a transplant.
Family and friends rallied around her, volunteering to be tested as potential donors. In the end, her cousin Alexis McDonald, 28, proved to be the perfect match. On July 22, 2024, Alexis selflessly donated her kidney to Emily, giving her younger cousin a second chance at life.
Now, one year later, both cousins are not only surviving—but thriving.

“Emily’s surgery was amazing. Her kidney started working right away,” said Emily’s aunt, Jill Hannan McDonald. “Alexis was a rock star through it all. She struggled a bit at first with complications, but by three months, she was back to normal. Today, they’re both doing wonderful.”
Emily’s recovery was nothing short of remarkable. Six months after surgery, doctors were able to take her off the extensive antibiotics regimen—a rare milestone for transplant patients. She will have to continue immunosuppressants the rest of her life. To celebrate, she embarked on a cruise with her boyfriend, embracing a new chapter of freedom and health.
Emily’s journey took a little longer. After being hospitalized two weeks post-surgery due to stent issues, she steadily regained her strength. By the six-month mark, she was enrolled in online classes for college, and this semester she’s officially back in the classroom.
The family recently celebrated the girls’ “one-year kidney birthday” with a big party. For the cousins, the milestone was about more than health—it was about celebrating the bond forged in sacrifice and love. They even commemorated it with matching tattoos, a permanent reminder of their shared journey.
“Their bond is just so close now,” Jill shared. “Alexis will always be Emily’s hero. She saved her life.”
For both young women, the past year has been about reclaiming their lives. Emily has been making up for lost time—traveling, laughing, and finally enjoying the everyday joys she once feared she might lose. Alexis has resumed her studies and continues to be cautious about her health, but her resilience shines as she presses forward.
Through it all, the family has remained vocal about the power of living organ donation.
“This journey has made us passionate about sharing the importance of living donors,” Jill said. “Because of Alexis’s gift, Emily’s kidney worked immediately, and her life was saved. That’s something we’ll never stop being grateful for.”
One year later, the Sofranec and McDonald families are celebrating more than just good health—they’re celebrating courage, sacrifice, and a bond that will last a lifetime.
