Thousands of people in multiple parishes were without power Sunday night after an abrupt outage. The Demco outage map showed red for a large portion of Livingston and Ascension parishes, but the outages also impacted Tangipohoa, St. Helena, East Baton Rouge and the Felicianas.
Demco did issue a statement Monday morning to UWK:
“DEMCO members in areas of Ascension and Livingston Parish experienced an outage due to a temporary loss of transmission at our metering point. Transmission to DEMCO’s system was restored within two hours, and service to members was quickly brought back online. Transmission interruptions like this can happen from time to time when there are disruptions on the regional power grid.”
At its start, more than 27,000 were without power with nearly 20,000 of the outages being in Livingston Parish. Roughly 7,500 were without power in Ascension Parish. However, as of 10 p.m., about 10,00 remained without power with over 6,800 people in Livingston Parish and another 3,000 in Ascension still in the dark. As of 10:30 p.m., the numbers went down to nearly 3,000 in Livingston Parish and another 2,200 in Ascension. Majority of everyone in the other parishes with outages had been restored.
Entergy has a few outages, also in Livingston Parish, specifically in French Settlement.
Neither company has provided any reasons into the outage at this time. Demco’s website is saying power will be restored anywhere between 3:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.
UWK has calls into Demco to find out what caused the outage and a timeframe of when it will be restored, but as of publication, no one answered.
