BATON ROUGE — As the digital world continues to grow, so do the challenges of ensuring children’s online safety. With major platforms like Roblox, Instagram, and Snapchat implementing new parental controls, digital habits educator Kati Morse LeBreton of The Redhead Method, emphasizes that the key to protecting children online lies in parental involvement.
“Anything that is connected to the internet, parents just need to assume that it is not private in any way,” LeBreton said. “The internet is constantly changing, and parents must adapt to keep their children safe.”
Rising Concerns About Online Safety
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (2024), over 60% of children aged 8–12 encounter online risks, including exposure to inappropriate content or interactions with potential predators. A study from the Pew Research Center (2023) revealed that 71% of parents worry about their children’s online safety, with 46% feeling unprepared to manage it effectively.
Roblox, a gaming platform popular among kids, is taking action. On November 18, 2024, the platform announced new features to protect its users under 13 with promises to release more in 2025. These include requiring parents to create accounts and verify them using a credit card or ID which allows them to manage their child’s account remotely.
LeBreton praised the update, saying, “What I do like about this Roblox update is that it forces parents to make their own account. Some parents probably can’t even explain what Roblox is, but their kids play it. This update is a step toward helping parents engage with their children’s digital lives.”
Building Awareness and Communication
LeBreton urges parents to understand the platforms their children use and to create a culture of open communication.
“Children will always want to participate online because that’s where their world is. It doesn’t mean your parenting skills are bad; it means they are kids living in the digital age,” she said.
To address this, she suggests parents view devices as responsibilities rather than toys.
“It’s like teaching a child to drive a car—it’s a responsibility that requires rules, guidance, and practice. The same applies to navigating the internet.”
LeBreton also encourages parents to talk openly about online safety, starting at a young age.
“The internet isn’t going away. Most kids now have a digital identity, whether through school accounts or email addresses. Talking about what it means to be online is crucial.”
How to Set Up Roblox Parental Controls
Roblox’s new parental control features make it easier for parents to safeguard their children. Here’s how to set them up:
- Open Roblox: Click on the ellipsis (three dots) to access the “More” feature.
- Go to Settings: Select “Parental Controls.”
- Link Your Account: Follow the instructions to verify your identity and connect your account to your child’s.
- Adjust Controls: Set restrictions for chat, friend requests, and game access based on your child’s age.
Parental Controls Across Platforms
Similar updates are rolling out across platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, which recently introduced tools allowing parents to monitor usage, set limits, and approve friend requests.
However, experts warn that parental controls are only part of the solution. “Despite your best efforts, it’s still possible for kids to encounter harmful content. The best defense is an open dialogue about online dangers and trust-building,” said LeBreton.
Creating a Safe Digital Environment
LeBreton’s workshops focus on fostering discussions between parents and children, encouraging them to view the internet as a tool rather than a toy. “This skill isn’t innate,” she explained. “Just like learning to drive, navigating the internet requires practice and guidance.”
As digital platforms evolve, parental involvement remains the cornerstone of online safety. By staying informed, using available tools, and maintaining open communication, parents can help their children navigate the digital world responsibly.
