ALBANY — According to officials, both lanes of Highway 43 are now back open after being closed earlier this afternoon from Cain’s Supermarket to the light at Florida and Highway 43 intersection due to a gas leak. However, evacuated residents are not allowed to return to their homes at this time.
A mandatory evacuation notice for South Montpelier Ave., in the area of 2nd Street to Prokop Road was posted earlier today.
Both the Albany Police and Fire District #1 are currently on the scene of a gas leak, and have ATMOS Natural Gas is also at the location, according to information shared by Albany Police. Officials are working quickly to secure the leak and ensure safety of all nearby.
Although there is no immediate threat to the school, Albany High School shared that it was in a shelter in place earlier Wednesday afternoon. The school anticipates normal dismissal, but will post updates on its Facebook.
In the event you detect a gas odor in or around your home or business, please take necessary precautions by shutting off air intake systems, including AC and window units, and take shelter in place, officials advise.
