BATON ROUGE — A pedestrian died after a crash that happened Tuesday night on Hooper Road near Plank Road. The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was an off-duty deputy.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO) investigating the crash. According to EBRSO, it happened around 8 p.m. on March 3.
Preliminary information indicates that an off-duty EBRSO deputy was driving westbound on Hooper Road in an unmarked unit. The deputy had just crossed Plank Road when a man stepped into the road directly into the deputy’s lane of travel and was struck by the unit, per EBRSO.
The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.
According to EBRSO, the off-duty deputy was tested for impairment per standard protocol. Investigators have found no evidence that the deputy was speeding, impaired or otherwise at fault, at this time.
Officials are withholding the pedestrian’s identity, pending notifying next of kin. He is believed to be homeless, according to EBRSO.
The investigation is ongoing. As part of the ongoing investigation, an autopsy and toxicology testing will be conducted to determine whether any factors may have contributed to the incident.
