Plaquemine PD investigating Christmas Day shooting

PLAQUEMINE — Just one day after a double homicide in Plaquemine, officers in Iberville Parish are now investigating another shooting.

The latest shooting happened on Meriam St. near Gum St. just before 11 p.m. on Christmas Day.

Plaquemine Police Chief Stephen Engolio tells UWK that multiple shots were fired with one person hit. The person had non-life threatening injuries.

“Several suspects are being investigated at this time. I can’t say much more till we gather up some more information,” said Chief Engolio.

It’s unclear at this time if this shooting is connected to the double homicide that happened Christmas Eve around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of Hwy. 1 & Hwy. 77. The two scenes are less than two miles away. Plaquemine Police are still investigating if the most recent shooting has any connection to the double homicides.

Two people were killed and police are actively still searching for Markeithan Jamal Mcginnis, 22, who is wanted on two counts of first-degree murder in connection to the Christmas Eve murders. That shooting is believed to be an ongoing feud stemming from a robbery and deadly shooting in 2018 in Plaquemine.

“We have probably had 30 retaliatory shootings since that one incident,” said Chief Engolio.

Anyone with any information on either shooting is asked to call Plaquemine Police or IPSO at (225) 687-9273.
