PLAQUEMINE — The Plaquemine Police Dept. has arrested a second suspect in connection to a double murder on Christmas Eve 2023 in Plaquemine. It comes after another suspect turned himself in on Dec. 30th.
Travis Dawayne Pitcher, 20, was arrested on Jan. 5, 2024 for his alleged role in the double murder. He’s charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
Last last month, Markeithan McGinnis, 22, turned himself on Dec. 30th. He also is charged with two counts of second degree murder and two counts is attempted second degree murder.
It comes after a shooting that left two people dead on Christmas Eve around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of La 1 and Hwy. 77 in front of a Circle K.
“Justin Young & Marcus Williams, both of Plaquemine, were killed after multiple rounds were fired off. Two back seat passengers escaped unharmed,” said Plaquemine Police Chief Stephen Engolio.
Officials say while at a red light, a vehicle pulled up next to another vehicle that had four people inside of it.
The vehicle with the four people inside was shot at by occupants of the other vehicle multiple times. Young & Williams died in the shooting, one at the scene and another after they were transported to a hospital.
“This has been an ongoing feud from a robbery and shooting gone bad in 2018. We have probably had 30 retaliatory shootings since that one incident,” said Chief Engolio.
Chief Engolio said even with two arrests, additional arrests could be pending.
The next day, Plaquemine Police had another shooting on Christmas Day in which one person was injured.
