Teenagers arrested in Pointe Coupee

POINTE COUPEE — Three teenagers, whose names cannot be disclosed due to their ages, left a group home in Baton Rouge before allegedly embarking on a crime spree across multiple parishes, leading police on a high-speed pursuit and ending after they were arrested in Pointe Coupee. Since then, all three are now awaiting charges from various law enforcement agencies.

Around 1 a.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2024, the teenagers are accused of stealing a Chrysler van after allegedly “ransacking” a group home in the Scotlandville area of Baton Rouge.

Multiple agencies are piecing together their night, but early reports suggest that the trio allegedly broke into a Family Dollar in Baton Rouge and committed robbery. They are then alleged to have traveled to St. Landry Parish, where they reportedly vandalized a Texaco in Krotz Springs.

Around 7 a.m. on Sunday, Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff Rene Thibodeaux received a call from Krotz Springs Police, informing them that three males in a van were headed towards Pointe Coupee Parish after the Texaco incident.

At that moment, a Livonia Police officer and a Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s deputy spotted the wanted van on Highway 190, traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph. Law enforcement pursued the van for at least 10 miles before the driver turned onto Little Italy Rd. and came to a stop, east of Pattern Rd. off of Hwy. 190 in Pointe Coupee Parish.

Two juveniles were taken into custody immediately, while one was tased before fleeing into nearby woods. Sheriff Thibodeaux requested the Angola dogs search team, but an off-duty Baton Rouge Police officer, who happened to be in a deer stand in the woods, spotted the third juvenile running, officials tell UWK. The teen was apprehended with the assistance of the off-duty officer, and the dogs were called off by 8 a.m.

A search of the stolen van revealed several items reported stolen from the Texaco in Krotz Springs, including tee-shirts, phone chargers, and two guns – one a large machete and the other appearing to be a pellet pistol.

All three teenagers who were arrested in Pointe Coupee are currently being questioned, and it remains unclear which jurisdiction will handle charges first, as they face charges in multiple parishes. In East Baton Rouge Parish, they are accused of theft and robbery. In St. Landry Parish, they also face theft charges, and in Pointe Coupee Parish, they are accused of fleeing from law enforcement, among other charges.
