Pointe Coupee: Firefighters battle fire at Cajun 2 plant

NEW ROADS, La. — A fire at a Pointe Coupee Parish plant is now contained, according to Morganza Fire Chief Pedro Leonard.

It was around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28 when firefighters responded to the Cajun 2 plant off of Cajun II Rd. in New Roads. That’s north of La 10 in Pointe Coupee Parish.

Early reports are the conveyor belt towards the back of the plant caught on fire, said Chief Leonard.

The plant was staffed at the time of the fire, but thankfully, no injuries have been reported. Because this portion of the plant was staffed, someone noticed the spark and called the fire department.

Multiple fire departments and officials came together to battle the blaze in the early morning hours. As of 8:30 a.m., officials report to UWK that the fire has been contained. Firefighters are now inside the area fighting any hot spots.

This portion of the plant will be shut down. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time.
