Pointe Coupee: Four adults, seven kids lose home and all belongings to fire

MORGANZA, La. — A family of 11 has been displaced and in need of just about everything after a fire ripped through their Pointe Coupee Parish home Monday afternoon.

The call came in around 3:30 p.m. on March 18, 2024 on Bayou Fordoche Rd., that’s just outside of Morganza. It took multiple engines from several area fire departments to get the blaze under control including Morganza, New Roads and Livonia fire departments. It was nearly 25 minutes before the fire was contained, but the home has been deemed a total loss.

“What worked against us was the model of the home. It’s a 60-70 yr old home so that wood burns much faster due to the chemicals in it,” said Morganza Fire Chief Aaron Edwards.

Everyone did evacuate the Pointe Coupee Parish home when it caught on fire, but they could not get any of their belongings. Chief Edwards tells UWK four adults and seven kids lived in the home.

“They need everything. They weren’t able to salvage anything from the house. They are trying to recover everything,” said Chief Edwards. Their clothing sizes are below.

Red Cross did put the family up last night in a hotel. Donations can be dropped off to the Morganza Fire Station at 151 Sansone St., Morganza, La 70759.

The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical at this time. Chief Edwards stressed to everyone to please make sure you have working smoke alarms.

  1. Same thing happened to me and my family November 2019. My mobile home was about the same age. Everybody was safe. My daughter was able to save our dogs but she went back inside like a crazy person to try and get the cat (she didn’t realize cat was already outside) and had an asthma attack when she made it back outside the burning home. She said it was so scary trying to find her way out again. I was so upset that she went back in but so happy that she came back out. We also lost everything we owned. Our home and all of our belongings. But thanks to the grace of God we were all safe and alive. Material things can be replaced but loved ones can’t. It was devastating but time heals. My heart and my prayers will be with this family!
