Two teens among four arrested during investigation that uncovered plans to “ambush and kill” BRPD officers

BATON ROUGE — Investigators say they have uncovered a plan to “ambush and kill” Baton Rouge police officers during an investigation involving reported gang members.

The investigations has led to three arrests, including two teenagers. Yazavier Gaines, 18, Bryson Lumbers, 20, and Dwayne Williams, 25, consistently posted firearms equipped with machine gun conversion devices on social media accounts, BRPD investigators said.

On June 4, BRPD Special Investigations Detectives and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force executed arrest warrants and apprehended Gaines, Lumbers, Williams and a 16-year-old juvenile.

During their investigation, BRPD says that all three suspects have numerous photographs/videos brandishing firearms equipped with the conversion devices. A Glock pistol with a conversion device was also found in an apartment. During the investigation police learned of the alleged plan to ambush and kill BRPD officer.

The thwarted plot follows 2016’s ambush attack on police in Baton Rouge where six law enforcement officers were shot. The shooting was in the wake of the deadly police shooting of Alton Sterling.

Three officers died in the attack — EBRSO deputy Brad Garafola, BRPD officer Matthew Gerald, and BRPD corporal Montrell Jackson. EBRSO sergeant Nick Tullier was critically wounded and died from complications in 2022.
