Prairieville firefighters use union dues to give kids a Merry Christmas

PRAIRIEVILLE — Firefighters from the Prairieville Fire Department used a portion of their union dues to give back to some kids in the community.

“Our union is made up of 30 members, and each one pays in union dues each month,” said Blake Jackson with the Prairieville Fire Department. “They are collected, and this year, our union agreed to spend it. We went and bought gifts for three children in our community. We wanted to help people in the community.”

Jackson said the firefighters put the union dues towards gifts that they wrapped on Wednesday. He said it was an opportunity to spend time with coworkers and their families.

“It’s always great when a group of people can get together and give back to the community that supports us,” Jackson said. “We rely on the support of our community to help fund and make our department operate at a high level, so giving back to that same community is always great.”

The families picked up their gifts on Thursday.

“We often meet people at tough times of their lives and in high-stress situations, so being able to see the families pick up their gifts and know that the stress and worry for Christmas this year is taken care of was very rewarding,” Jackson said. “We hope to see this event grow each year moving forward. With fundraising and local support, we look forward to being able to sponsor more and more students each year. It’s our job to serve and protect the citizens of Prairieville, but it was truly an honor to give back in a different way this year. Every child deserves a merry Christmas, and we were honored to make sure that was a reality for three kids this year.”
