SLIDELL — A drug dealer who did 19 years in prison and started dealing again less than two years later has been sentenced to 30 more years behind bars.
Majuangy Evans, 45, was sentenced as a habitual offender Thursday after a conviction in 2024 for distribution of fentanyl, a district attorney’s office press release said.
Collin Sims, district attorney for the 22nd Judicial District, said Evans, of Slidell, represented himself in the 2024 trial and told jurors he was a drug dealer.
“He brazenly claimed to the jury that he had only ‘quit the game’ eight days before his arrest because he knew the police were watching him,” Sims said.
Sims said that when Evans was arrested, he was still on parole for a 2001 Jefferson Parish conviction for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. He served 19 years of a 45-year sentence in that case.
“He had been out of prison for only 16 months before resuming his criminal activities in St. Tammany Parish,” Sims said.
After his conviction in the 2024 case, prosecutors charged Evans as a habitual offender, which allows significantly longer sentences when people are convicted of the same kind of crime repeatedly.
Evans also had a 2000 conviction on a cocaine charge in Orleans Parish, Sims said.
Judge John A. Keller sentenced Evans to 20 years in jail, which he can serve at the same time he serves the rest of his sentence in the 2001case, followed by an additional 10 years.
