BATON ROUGE — Attention Baton Rouge foodies: it’s time to rejoice! Restaurant Week is in full swing, with 48 local establishments participating in this year’s winter specials.
The event officially runs from January 27 to February 1, but several restaurants have extended their offerings into the first week of February.
Baton Rouge restaurateur Stephen Hightower, who organizes the event, emphasizes the importance of Winter Restaurant Week, as January can be a slow period for many Capital City eateries.
“We do it at the end of January and the end of July because those are the slower times of the year for the restaurant business. We’re creating a platform that gets people excited about eating out and gives them an excuse to eat out,” Hightower said.
The biannual event encourages restaurants to create fixed-price menus, typically featuring three courses.
“It’s something that allows restaurants to either focus on their favorite dishes that their restaurant serves, or they have the opportunity to try out new things to see what the community thinks and see if they want to add it to their menu. A lot of them just try new things, just to see how it goes,” Hightower explained.
The event extends beyond Baton Rouge, with participating restaurants in Gonzales and as far as St. Francisville also offering specials.
Hightower highlighted how the week showcases the area’s vibrant culinary scene.
“We have some incredible restaurants here—from seafood to fast casual, different types of ethnic foods from Indian to Asian to Lebanese participating this year. Every segment of cuisine in Baton Rouge is represented. There’s fine dining steak houses to some of the long-time restaurants like Ruffino’s on down to Mike Anderson’s. It’s a great representation of how talented our restaurant operators and restaurateurs are,” Hightower said.
