NEW ORLEANS — After suffering their seventh straight loss on Sunday, the New Orleans Saints have decided to fire head coach Dennis Allen, according to multiple reports.
Sunday’s painful 23-22 loss came against one of the NFL’s weakest teams, the Carolina Panthers, with the Saints squandering a lead in the final minutes of the game.
Allen’s record as the Saints’ head coach was 18-25.
“I have to be better for our guys,” Allen said after Sunday’s loss. “Here’s what I’ll say: I’m going to keep coming in every day and fighting my ass off, just like I have every single day that I’ve been here. I’ll just keep doing that.”
The New Orleans Saints began the 2024 season with a promising 2-0 record after dominant victories over the Carolina Panthers (47-10) and the Dallas Cowboys (44-19). However, their performance declined sharply, with losses to NFC South rivals, including a 24-26 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons and Sunday’s loss to the Panthers. The team also endured an embarrassing 33-10 defeat in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos, led by former Saints head coach Sean Payton.
Allen was appointed as the Saints’ 17th head coach on February 8, 2022. He had spent 12 seasons as part of the Saints’ coaching staff and was a member of the team’s Super Bowl XLIV championship roster. As the team’s defensive coordinator, Allen oversaw five consecutive winning seasons and helped the Saints capture four straight NFC South division titles.
Allen also served as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 2012 to 2014. He was 8-28 with the Raiders.
The Saints have three consecutive home games: Falcons (Nov. 10), Cleveland Browns (Nov. 17) and Los Angeles Rams (Dec. 1).
