BATON ROUGE — The East Baton Rouge School Board will vote to appoint an interim superintendent and to approve or deny the terms of a proposed buyout with the current superintendent Tuesday during a special meeting.
The special meeting comes after Dr. Sito Narcisse announced his plans to step down on Friday.

Officials say the school board is recommending Adam Smith as the interim superintendent. Smith currently serves as associate superintendent for exceptional student services at East Baton Rouge School System. Smith previously served as an interim superintendent in 2020. Smith was a finalist with Narcisse for the superintendent position in 2021 but was passed over in favor of Narcisse.
“Adam Smith brings experience and focus that will serve our students, teachers, and staff well during this period of transition,” school board President Carla Powell Lewis and Vice President Patrick Martin said in a statement. “He has dedicated his career to educating the children of Baton Rouge and improving equitable access to high-quality education.”
The process to name a permanent replacement could take “several months”.
