EBRSO captures escaped inmate after he jumped out of transport van

BATON ROUGE — East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies and several assisting agencies found and arrested an inmate nearly 24 hours after he escaped on Tuesday, June 18.

Shawn Andrew Simien, 34, was found in the Glen Oaks area in an empty building off of Maplewood Dr. around 4:45 p.m. on June 19 after EBRSO deputies continued searching for him since his escape.

It comes after officials say the Dept. of Corrections inmate jumped out of a transport van near Hooper and Plank roads.

He was identified as Shawn Andrew Simien. He’s was serving time for first-degree robbery and was expected to be released on Aug. 26, 2025. He had been in the work release program since May 28, 2023.

The inmate is a state inmate who is being housed in the work release facility in East Baton Rouge. Officials say as he was being transported back to prison after leaving his job site when he jumped out.

He will be facing an additional charge of simple escape and most likely, his work release privileges will be revoked.

The Louisiana State Police Fugitive Task Force, K-9 and Gang Intelligence and Enforcement Unit assisted EBRSO detectives with the search and arrest.
