Search underway for a brother & sister after a disturbance with a gun at a school vigil

BATON ROUGE — Southern University Police have arrest warrants for a brother and sister accused of having a gun at a vigil at the lab school this week for a student who died. The brother is also accused of threatening to blow up and shoot up the school, arrest records show.

Kailen Wheelock, 17, is accused of possessing a gun on school property and her 20-year-old brother Kameron Wheelock is accused of the same charge along with terrorizing.

The vigil Wednesday at the university’s lab school was in memory of Charon Diggs, who died Sept. 11, according to a post on the school’s Facebook page. It did not explain how she died.

Kailen Wheelock’s arrest warrant said that she “was unwanted at the vigil due to prior conflict involving the deceased student and others.”

After she arrived, records show a verbal argument escalated into a fight involving several people. A police officer tried to remove her from the event.

“During the disturbance, multiple students ran toward Officer Jackson yelling that a male involved in the disturbance had a firearm and repeating threats they stated had been made,” the brother’s arrest warrant said.

The officer did not see the gun or hear the threats, but Kameron Wheelock left in a white pickup truck at the officer’s order.

A detective investigating the events the next day learned that several students said they saw Kailen Wheelock with the gun, the warrant said. It was described as something similar to a Glock, with some kind of orange band or wrap attached to it, according to the warrant.

One witness said Kailen Wheelock “became angry and began clutching a firearm that was concealed in her clothing,” the warrant said.

Another witness said the sister initially had the gun tucked inside her pants but later handed it off to her brother, the warrant said.

The detective found other witnesses who heard Kameron Wheelock make threats while he was at the school. One witness reported that Wheelock said “y’all lucky I don’t blow this b*tch up,” according to the warrant.

A different witness said that Wheelock said “tell your little people if I see them at school tomorrow, I’m going to shoot this b*tch up,” the warrant said.

The warrant does not specify whether either of the Wheelock siblings are current students at the school.

They had not been booked as of Noon on Friday. A university spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about the incident.
