PLAQUEMINE— A fundraiser is set for Friday, October 25, 2024, in honor of a non-profit started for a Brusly teen killed too soon, Maggie Dunn.
Dunn and one of her best friends Caroline Gill, were killed during a police pursuit in Brusly on New Year’s Eve 2022. Maggie’s brother Liam Dunn was also in the car, and miraculously survived. He was severely injured and has now made a full recovery.
The Med Foundation will host its 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at the Island Golf Course in Plaquemine. This event is not just about playing the game of golf but supporting a larger cause.
A look back at last year’s success
Randall Dunn, the founder of the MED Foundation and Maggie & Liam’s dad, shared his reflections on last year’s event, which attracted 60 teams and featured two full flights of golf.
“It was an all-day event with a great turnout for our first time,” Dunn explained. “We also had around 30 hole sponsors and nine vendors serving food and drinks on the course.”
This year’s tournament is on track for similar participation.
One exciting addition to this year’s tournament is a raffle for a rifle, with tickets currently on sale. The funds raised from this event will help the foundation in offering funeral expense assistance and other vital support services.
“We’ve been able to help nine families with funeral expenses over the past year, and we’ve partnered with organizations like Hankies to Hope, which provides additional grief support,” Dunn noted. These partnerships allow the foundation to further its reach on families navigating the pain of losing a child or loved one
On the Horizon: The Grieving Dads Project
While the golf tournament is the primary focus this fall, the MED Foundation is also preparing for new initiatives to support fathers in their grief. Starting in January 2025, Dunn plans to launch a grieving dads project inspired by his personal experience.
“After losing a child, dads often have to be the strong ones,” Dunn explained. “It’s hard for them to show their emotions or seek support. My goal with this project is to create a safe space where fathers can talk one-on-one about their grief, eventually bringing them together for group discussions.”
