Sentencing date for Melanie Curtin postponed

Melanie Curtin was found guilty of 1st degree rape in Dec. 2021 with her sentencing scheduled for Jan. 24, 2022.

According to the latest court documents filed, a Livingston Parish judge has signed off on moving Melanie Curtin’s sentencing date from Jan. 24, 2022 to Feb. 17, 2022.

Curtin was found guilty on Dec. 3, 2021 by a unanimous jury of 1st degree rape and video voyeurism. The rape was of an unconscious woman.

First degree rape carries a mandatory life sentence so the sentencing date is more of a formality than anything else. However, Curtin’s attorneys are wanting to file a possible motion for new trial and motion for post-verdict judgement of acquittal. Both post-trial motions must be wrapped up before the sentencing. Because the attorneys involved had Covid, that set them behind, hence the reason for the postponed sentencing.

Curtin remains locked up without any bond.
