BATON ROUGE — Seven people were taken to a hospital Friday morning after showing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. The Baton Rouge Fire Department, along with East Baton Rouge EMS, responded to a location on Brady Street, where the victims were located.
All patients were showing signs of possible carbon monoxide poisoning and were conscious, Baton Rouge Fire said. They were transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
The Hazardous Materials Unit believes that a gas-powered HVAC system was the source of the carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is often called the “invisible killer” because it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and fatigue.
Here are some tips from the Baton Rouge Fire Department to keep you and your family safe:
- Install carbon monoxide (CO) detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
- Test CO detectors monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.
- Have all gas appliances, including HVAC systems, serviced annually by a qualified technician.
- Never use generators, grills, or other gas-burning devices inside your home or garage.
- Working CO detectors save lives. If your alarm sounds or you suspect CO exposure, leave the area immediately and call 911.
