BATON ROUGE — The risk of severe storms and possible tornadoes has increased for South Louisiana on Saturday.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the Baton Rouge metro area under a Moderate Risk (level 4 of 5) for severe weather. This threat includes East Baton Rouge Parish, Livingston Parish, East Feliciana Parish, Tangipahoa Parish, St. Helena Parish, Pointe Coupee, Ascension, West Baton Rouge, Iberville, and West Feliciana parishes.
Most areas of Louisiana south and west of Baton Rouge are under an Enhanced Risk (level 3 of 5) for severe weather.
“The activity ahead of the front will have every opportunity to become severe as well,” the NWS stated. “This does not look to be a situation where storms start to develop locally and move north of the area before becoming severe.”
Scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms are expected to develop beginning Saturday morning and continuing into the late evening hours. These storms will be capable of damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes, a few of which could be strong and/or long-tracked.

Forecasters note that this is an unusually deep low-pressure system, creating a rare high-risk storm event for this far south.
“For our area, these event don`t typically line up like this for us, so please have a plan incase severe weather comes your way as this could shape out to be a historic day across much of the southeast, including our area.”
