BATON ROUGE – A promising future was cut short when 21-year-old Patricia Saidu, a beloved daughter, sister, and friend, died in a fiery car crash along I-10 near LaPlace earlier this week. She was a graduate of Liberty High School in Baton Rouge.
Patricia, a chemistry graduate of Xavier University on a pre-med track, was known for her positivity, faith, and determination. Her younger brother, Patrick Saidu, who shared an especially close bond with her, says her legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched.
A Sibling Bond Like No Other
“We attended all the same schools together, had the same teachers. She set the path, and I followed,” Saidu said through tears. “She was always smiling, always uplifting. Patricia never let things weigh her down. She finished her bachelor’s degree in just three years—that was just the kind of hard worker she was.”
The siblings, just over a year apart in age and their parents’ only children, grew up side-by-side. Saidu remembers their school days like stepping stones that Patricia carved out first. “She made student of the year in middle school, and I felt like I had to live up to the standard she set,” he said with a soft laugh. “But she never made it a competition. She just wanted the best for me.”
Driven by Faith and Education
Patricia’s faith was central to who she was. A member of Bethany Church, she lived with a quiet confidence in God. Her uncle, Dr. Leone Elliott, a physician and mentor, guided her through her academic journey, encouraging her to pursue medicine after excelling in chemistry. “She was on the right path,” Saidu said. “She truly loved her studies. She was going to make a difference.”
The Night of the Accident
That future was stolen on Sunday night. According to Louisiana State Police, Patricia’s car collided head-on with an SUV driving the wrong way on I-10 after coming off U.S. 51 in LaPlace in St. John the Baptist Parish. Both vehicles caught fire. Troopers say Patricia’s car spun out, pinned against a concrete pillar, and quickly became engulfed in flames. Despite rescue efforts, she could not be saved.
Her brother vividly recalls the moment state troopers knocked on his door in the early hours of the morning.
“They asked me my name, asked about Patricia… and then they told me she had been pronounced deceased,” he said quietly. “She was just coming home after hanging out with her friends. She never made it back.”
A Legacy of Kindness
In the days since, Saidu says the outpouring of love from Patricia’s friends, classmates, and church community has been overwhelming.
“When she died, I realized just how many people she had blessed. People have been sharing stories about how she helped them financially, how she was there when times got hard, how she made them laugh. She was just that person—always making someone’s life better.”
Despite his own grief, Saidu says he is holding onto gratitude. “I’ve been telling people to thank God that we had the opportunity to meet her,” he said. “She was only here for 21 years, but she made those years count.”
Baton Rouge Youth Coalition Mourns Loss of Cherished Fellow
Patricia Saidu was more than a student with big dreams—she was a cherished fellow at the Baton Rouge Youth Coalition (BRYC), where she left a lasting impact on her peers and mentors.
BRYC CEO Lucas Spielfogel released the following statement after Patricia’s passing:
“We at BRYC are heartbroken and cannot fathom Patricia’s tragic passing. We wish her family as much peace and healing as is possible during this time and remain prepared to assist in any way, indefinitely. Patricia was as good a human as there is, with a bright future as a healthcare professional. BRYC will honor her legacy, not only by keeping her memory fresh in the minds of all those who cared deeply for her, but by ensuring that more and more students can pursue the dream to which she was so committed. We love you, Patricia.”
A Parent’s Heartbreak: “Losing a child is an unimaginable pain”
Their mother, Martha Saidu, shared on a GoFundMe page, that Patricia’s life had truly just begun. A recent graduate from Xavier University, she says her daughter dreamed of becoming a doctor so she could give back to her community.
“She was not just our daughter—she was a light in our lives and in the lives of everyone who knew her. As a mother and father, losing a child is an unimaginable pain. Patricia was one of the two beautiful gifts God gave us, and her memory will forever live in our hearts,” Martha Saidu wrote.
Saying Goodbye
Patricia’s funeral is scheduled for October 4th. A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family with funeral expenses.
“She was my sister, my best friend, and my role model,” Saidu said. “She set the standard for what it means to live with joy, faith, and purpose. I’m proud of her, and I’ll carry her spirit with me for the rest of my life.”
