‘She would have delivered her baby girl in four days’ | Family speaks out after tree fell, killed woman & unborn baby

ERWINVILLE —- “Why,” it’s the only question the Browning & Kent families are left with after Kristin Browning and her unborn baby died when a tree fell on their trailer in Erwinville, Louisiana.

Her husband Justin Browning tells UWK that May 13, 2024 started out as any other. They had their final appointment before meeting their new baby in a few days.

“I had brought her to work that morning. And we met at the doctor’s office and we had a really good doctor’s visit with the maternal fetal medicine doctor and everything was everything was fine.“

Browning says they went home to cook dinner. They had just bathed their 5-year-old daughter when they noticed the weather quickly got bad.

“We got the alert for the weather service. We had just a couple of minutes to move to the bathroom to try to get to some sort of safety. In a matter of two or three minutes, that’s all it took before the tree came down.”

Three trees crushed the trailer trapping all three of them underneath. Kristin Browning, 31, was killed instantly.

Her parents, Shelly & Kenneth Kent, live nearby and rushed to their home.

“We cut the limbs off the back of the trailer and the paramedic, once we got to where they could see the wall, the wall was split open and they saw Autumn and they pulled her out. It took about 30-45 minutes to get Autumn out. Justin was trapped for over two hours,” Kenneth Kent told UWK.

“The entire time I’m on the phone with 9-1-1. I’m trying to get keep Autumn talking because at least if I know she’s talking, she’s okay. But Kristin never did. She was unresponsive from the time the tree fell,” said Browning.

“It was too late. There was nothing else we could do and our focus was getting the rest of them out,” said Kent.

After the accident, Justin and Autumn were transported to the hospital for medical treatment. The incident left Justin with a fractured neck. Their 5-year-old daughter, Autumn, had a few bumps and bruises and she had a knot on her head.

Justin tells UWK they had planned to wait until their sweet baby was born to find out its gender. After the loss, he called to hear the news he was suppose to hear with his wife just days later. It was a girl.

“I wanted to know that way we could give a name to it. We didn’t want it to just be the unborn baby. We wanted her to have a name. Her name was Anna Jane,” he said.

Her mother Shelly Kent tells UWK they spoke to each other every day.

“The last thing I told her was that I love her. I didn’t know this would happen. You never know when your last moment is. She was the best,” said Shelly Kent. “I don’t understand why. I would like to know why but I know I never will. I just wish she was here.”

“She was one of a kind. She was amazing and I don’t know what we’re going to do. How are we going to get through it,” said Kristin Browning’s mother-in-law Deena Browning. “They were so excited. They had tried and tried and they finally were going to have a baby together. We only had four days and she was going to deliver her baby girl.”

Both the Kent and Browning families say they are overwhelmed by the love and support they have received from the community and there are too many people to thank. They ask however for everyone to please keep them in your continued prayers.
