Shenandoah murders update: Christina Deloach was her daddy’s world | “Her dad killing her comes as a complete shock”

“He would do anything for her so I don’t know what made him snap and do what he did”

BATON ROUGE, La. — The father of Christina Deloach’s 10-yr-old son is trying to come to terms with a harsh reality. Not only is she gone, but the man who worshipped her, her own father, is accused of shooting and killing her. Now, Ashton Hughes is left planning Christina’s funeral at only 30 years old.

It was just before 2 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2024 when East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home on Bluewater Dr. off of George O’Neal Rd. for a triple shooting. Inside the Shenandoah neighborhood home, two people died from multiple gunshot wounds before Brent Deloach, 63, allegedly turned the gun on himself.

Deloach’s father Sidney Deloach, 84, and his daughter, Christina Deloach, 30, were both killed. An autopsy found the cause of death for both the grandfather and Christina was homicide and the manner was gunshot wounds.

Hughes and Christina, known as Nicole to her loved ones, have a son together and despite not being in a relationship the last few years, they lived together to raise their son.

“Me and Nicole, we co-parent together, but we haven’t been in a relationship for like two years. We see each other every day. It’s kind of like best friends in a way but just to raise our son the right way,” said Hughes.

Hughes has known Christina the last 12 years and says, “She was very, very outgoing, almost to the point where it would be awkward sometimes. I mean, that sounds weird to say, but she said what was on her mind. She was very friendly when you got to know her. She would do anything for anybody. I mean, anything, like go out of her way to make sure she could help. This was a shock.”

Christina Deloach

Hughes recalls speaking to Christina Deloach around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 15.

“She called me. She was freaking out panicking. All she kept yelling was, ‘I don’t know any details. I don’t know any details.’ So I didn’t know what happened. Our son was still at school. So I was like, ‘Hey, tell me what you’re talking about.’ I mean she was scaring me. So then she told me, she was like, ‘My grandpa died. I’m on my way over there now’,” Hughes told UWK.

I said, ‘Okay, well, let me know,’ and that was the last time I talked to her. So I got home. Our son had a buddy of his wanting to spend the night and I said, ‘Baby, I don’t know if that’s gonna be a good idea.’ I said, ‘We’ll have to talk to your mom when she gets home because she has something we have to tell you.’ At that, at that point, I only knew that the grandpa had died. He was 80 something so I thought it was just natural causes.”

Least did he know though, that 1:30 p.m. call would be his last time to speak to his child’s mother.

“I messaged her when I got home later. It was about 5:00, and I still hadn’t heard anything. I messaged her and I said, ‘Hey, do you want to wait till you get here to tell Aricin (their son) or do you want me to go ahead and tell him because he’s asking for friends to stay the night? I told him that that was going to be a “you” question.’ I never heard from her,” Hughes said.

Hughes works at the Central Fire Dept. as a firefighter.

“So then, my captain at the fire department called me and said he had talked to a paramedic and was wondering if I had talked to Nicole because that name came up as one of the victims of the shooting that happened around 12. And I said, ‘Well, I talked to her at 1:30, but I haven’t talked to her since.’

Hughes frantically started trying to figure out what was going on.

“I knew it was them, but I saw one was transported. I still wasn’t sure so wasn’t sure if she was one of the ones that was transported. So my fire chief got on the phone with other people and he said he didn’t know for a fact but he did know that one of the people that was being transported was not a female. So that pretty much told me there that it was her,” Hughes added.

Hughes added more insight into why Christina Deloach went to her dad’s home to begin with. Her dad lived with her grandpa in the home on Bluewater.

Brent Deloach (father), Christina Deloach (daughter), Sidney Deloach (grandfather)

“From what the detectives told me is there’s no telling how long it had been since he shot his dad so he called her over there to just say that grandpa had died. She got there and just wanted to see the grandpa and he wouldn’t let her. The detective said surveillance video showed her going back out to the car and the dad, Brent Deloach, was following her to the car and then they both went back inside. A couple minutes later the phone call to 911 was made,” said Hughes. “But when they got back inside, I think she forced her way past Brent to see the grandpa. They said as soon as she saw that the grandpa was shot, that’s when he shot her twice. Nobody knows why. I don’t think we’ll ever know why.”

But the most confusing part for Hughes is that he says Brent Deloach worshipped his daughter and she was the true definition of a daddy’s girl.

“I know he worshipped the ground she walked on like, anything she wanted, she got it since day one. Like since she was born, she was the definition of a daddy’s girl who got spoiled by her dad. Not in a bad way, just saying he would do anything for her. So I don’t know what made him snap and do what he did.”

The two were in business together, with Brent Deloach even appearing with Jay Leno about a decade ago about his product. But Hughes recalls Christina Deloach telling him her dad abruptly sold the company a few years ago. Now, Hughes and many others are trying to understand the “why.”

“Nobody can believe it. I could believe him killing somebody else over her but never hurting her, never in a million years. But like I said, everybody’s also been like weary around him because he’s always had that kind of personality and that vibe that something was off about him. But everybody just thought that’s how he was. He’s been single his whole life and poured his life into his business and Nicole, that was it. That was all that mattered to him pretty much. So never remarried after Nicole’s mom. Nicole and her mom haven’t been in a relationship since she was six years old. I do know her dad was committed to a mental hospital months ago, maybe a year ago. That’s what Christina told me.”

Hughes friends and co-workers are trying to help him come up with the money for a funeral and any money raised that’s left over after a funeral will go to Hughes and Christina’s son.
