GONZALES, La. – East Ascension High is dismissing early and allowing parents to check students out, according to the Ascension Parish Schools update on Facebook.

Ascension is asking parents and guardians to check students out in an orderly manner.

During a live press conference at 12:30 p.m. today, Ascension Parish School officials said one person is in custody following today’s lockdown at East Ascension High School.

The Gonzales Police Department is expected to release more information about this incident and the person in custody this afternoon.

A police spokesperson said the student accused by other students of bringing a weapon to school, was taken into custody at his home. Police said he was at school earlier in the day on Friday and walked off campus and returned home, where he was later found by law enforcement.

No guns were found or seen on campus. However, Ascension school officials said the school was placed on lockdown in an “abundance of caution” to keep students safe.

The lockdown at East Ascension High School was lifted and student went back to class.
