Louisiana and Roblox faced off in a Livingston Parish courthouse this morning as a judge heard arguments on a motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Liz Murrill last year.
Roblox is a popular gaming platform for children and young teens. It’s available on a variety of devices and gaming consoles, and is described as an “immersive” online gaming platform that provides a variety of experiences for users to play and engage with. Last year, Murrill filed a lawsuit against Roblox in the 21st Judicial District on the basis that the platform and business is not keeping children safe from online predators and child sexual abuse material.
“We continue to argue that our lawsuit is based on the material misrepresentations that Roblox makes to the public, to parents, and to kids, that it is a safe product for your kids,” Murrill said. “It is not a safe product for your kids. I’m here to tell you, if anybody has any question about this, that it is not a safe place for your child.”
Murrill doesn’t expect a decision on the motion until next month. “The judge ruled pretty quickly in the TikTok case. I don’t remember exactly how long it was, but I would say it was probably within four weeks,” she said. Murrill added that a lot of the arguments in this case were similar to the TikTok case, and she thinks the judge is very educated on some of the issues.
