EAST FELICIANA — At Slaughter Elementary, the bond between students and staff goes beyond the classroom—and School Resource Officer Chelsea Thompson is a shining example.
Recently, Chelsea shared a touching moment with a student who struggles with test anxiety. One day, the student became uneasy during a test, and Chelsea gently encouraged him: finish quickly, and they could play together. The simple encouragement worked wonders. “He looked at me, he smiled, and he ran to finish his test faster than I’ve ever seen him go,” Chelsea recalled. Afterward, the student even prepared a small meal for them to share, a moment captured in a candid classroom photo.
“I didn’t even know someone had taken a picture,” Chelsea said. “When I saw it, I was a little shocked. It was just such a personal, genuine moment.”
Chelsea’s relationship with the student is built on trust and care. Every day, he greets her with hugs and wants her to walk him to class. “We’ve definitely built a relationship,” she said. “Everyone at the school is like a big family, and it’s really a personal, good experience.”
For Chelsea, her work with children requires more than just duty—it requires heart. “It takes a special person to deal with children. If you don’t have the heart for it, I don’t think that you should be doing it. But just remember that at one point, you were that child, unsure of things, wanting that extra help or attention.”
Her advice extends beyond adults to students themselves: if you see a classmate struggling, don’t be a bystander. “Be an upstander,” Chelsea urged. “Ask what you can do to help. Don’t just sit and watch—speak up, because you would want someone to help you too.”
At Slaughter Elementary, moments like these remind everyone that compassion and connection can make all the difference, one small act at a time.
