BATON ROUGE — Southern University has lifted the lockdown at its Baton Rouge campus, university officials announced. Effective immediately, all campus activities and classes are canceled for Thursday, September 11 and Friday, September 12. Weekend events have also been canceled.
This morning’s lockdown affected the entire campus, including the Southern University Law Center, the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and the Southern University Laboratory School.
At this time, commuter students and all non-essential employees should leave campus, according to Southern officials. Accommodations will be provided for students who live on campus, and instructions will be communicated to them directly.
Updates will be shared through campus email and the Jags Safe app.
Multiple sources tell UWK that Southern University received a threatening email, but officials have not yet confirmed its authenticity. The FBI is actively involved in the investigation, UWK has learned.
Seven other HBCUs received threats Thursday, according to multiple media reports. They include:
- Alabama State University
- Bethune-Cookman University
- Clark Atlanta University
- Hampton State University
- South Carolina State University
- Spelman College
- Virginia State University
There have been no reports of threats or incidents at Louisiana’s other four HBCUs: Dillard, Grambling State, Southern University at New Orleans and Xavier, the Louisiana Illuminator reports.
Officials have not said whether any of the threats are connected.
