BROUSSARD, La. — At least 12 squirrel monkeys were stolen from Zoosiana zoo in Broussard after a break in over the weekend, the facility announced on Facebook.
Zoosiana officials posted that “the individual targeted facilities of small primates and specifically compromised the Squirrel Monkey exhibit.” Officials said 12 of their squirrel monkeys were taken.
“The remaining squirrel monkeys have been carefully assessed by both the Zoosiana veterinarian and animal care team,” officials said. “There are no other apparent issues affecting their health or well being.”

Officials said that all other animals were accounted for and were “undisturbed.”
“Zoosiana is working with local, state and federal agencies and ask your help should you have any information related to this theft,” officials said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Broussard Police Crime Stoppers at 337-232-TIPS. Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries is assisting with the investigation.
The monkey theft at Zoosiana comes after two emperor tamarin monkeys were stolen from a zoo in Dallas. Officials have not linked to the two or even suggested they are related.
