St. Amant bicyclist dies days after being hit

ASCENSION — A bicyclist from St. Amant was injured severely after being hit by a vehicle and died days later at a hospital.

Shortly after 4:00 p.m. on July 1st, Louisiana State Police Troopers responded to a crash involving a bicyclist from St. Amant on Hwy. 429 and Martin Rd. in Ascension Parish.

Chant Parker, 39, of St. Amant, died days after he was hit.

The preliminary investigation shows that the driver of a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas was headed east on Hwy. 429. At the same time, Parker was riding a bicycle the same way on Hwy. 429. As the Volkswagen began to pass the bicycle on its left, troopers say Parker entered the path of the Volkswagen. As a result, the Volkswagen hit the back of the bicycle.

Troopers say Parker was ejected from the bicycle and was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. On July 5th, troopers learned that Parker died from his injuries at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, who was buckled at the time of the crash, was uninjured during the crash. Impairment is not suspected, however, standard toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis.

Louisiana bicycle law mandates that cyclists must adhere to traffic regulations just like motorists. Additionally, cyclists are required to ride as close to the right-hand side of the road as possible, except when passing or turning left. Adhering to these laws not only promotes roadway safety but also ensures better understanding between cyclists and other road users in Louisiana.
