St. Amant bicyclist killed in Ascension crash

St. Amant — It was early Thursday morning when Louisiana State Police responded to a crash involving a bicyclist from St. Amant.

It was around 5:00 a.m. on June 13, responded to Hwy. 22 just west of Hwy. 937 in Ascension Parish.

John A. Callender, 29, of St. Amant, lost his life.

The preliminary investigation reveals that a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was headed west on Hwy. 22 in the westbound lane. At the same time, troopers say that Callender was riding a bicycle on Hwy. 22, going west in the eastbound lane.

While driving in a passing zone, the driver of the Chevrolet crossed the center of the roadway to pass a vehicle ahead of it. In doing so, the driver hit the back of the bicycle.

Callender fell off his bicycle with critical injuries. The bicyclist from St. Amant was transported to a nearby hospital, but did not survive.

The driver of the vehicle, who was buckled at the time of the crash, was uninjured during the crash. Impairment is not suspected, however, standard toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana bicycle law mandates that cyclists must adhere to traffic regulations just like motorists. Additionally, cyclists are required to ride as close to the right-hand side of the road as possible, except when passing or turning left. Adhering to these laws not only promotes roadway safety but also ensures better understanding between cyclists and other road users in Louisiana.
