St. Gabriel: Accident at chemical plant leaves one person dead

ST. GABRIEL — One person has died after an accident at the PCS Nitrogen Plant in St. Gabriel.

The incident unfolded around 8:30 a.m. on March 20 at the plant on La 3115 in Iberville Parish. When officials arrived, they found an unresponsive man. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, but did not survive his injuries.

He has been identified as Matthew (Matt) Roberts.

The St. Gabriel Police Department is leading the investigation into the plant death with the help of the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office and the East Iberville Fire Department.

UWK has learned that the incident involved a forklift and a tote. That tote was being moved when it somehow slipped off the forklift triggering the accident. At this time, officials say they do not suspect any foul play, but the investigation is ongoing.
