ST. GABRIEL — It was just after 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15th, when St. Gabriel City Police officers responded to a single-vehicle crash near LA Hwy 75 that killed the driver. The victim was identified as Patrick Nelson Jr., the son of former St. Gabriel Police Chief Patrick Nelson.
The accident occurred near Hwy 75, close to East Iberville High School. Upon arrival, the officers found a vehicle that was flipped over.
Inside, they found Nelson Jr., who is said to have died from the injuries he sustained in the crash, officials said. Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful.
The Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office was called to the scene.
Police Chief Kevin J. Ambeau Sr. released a statement expressing his condolences to the family: “It was with great sadness that I had to tell the former Chief of Police, my former co-worker, that his son had succumbed to injuries sustained in a traffic crash. I’ve known Nelson Sr. all of my life and was working with him that night Nelson Jr. was born. This death has affected the entire community. Nelson Jr. was loved by all who knew him especially his family, which is one of the largest in St. Gabriel.
With the loss of one of my officers, Officer D. Faveroth, still very fresh, I’m now mourning the loss of one of my constituents who was very much so loved in this community. The St. Gabriel Police Department would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Nelson family, Ausbon family, and the Bush family.”
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Toxicology results are pending.
