ST. GABRIEL — After volunteers at two rescue organizations raised concerns about the conditions of dogs found at St. Gabriel Animal Hospital, St. Gabriel Police officers and teams from the rescues pulled more than 30 dogs from “unsafe” conditions.
Around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18, St. Gabriel Police officers and animal rescue groups Licking for Love and Animal Protection and Welfare Society (APAWS) went to the St. Gabriel Animal Hospital to check the conditions of the dogs staying there. According to officials, Iberville Parish Animal Control was also notified.
Conditions at the animal hospital were terrible, with officials saying that it appeared the dogs were abandoned and malnourished. Feces and trash could be seen on the floor throughout the clinic.
In addition, there were several unmarked dogs’ bodies and body parts in the clinic’s freezer, per police.
Rescuers ended up taking more than 30 dogs from the location, leaving after 1 a.m. Many of these dogs were in poor and worsening health, and at least one was taken to the LSU Emergency Clinic, where it passed away, one of the rescue organizations (Animal Protection and Welfare Society) reported.
Police and rescuers reported multiple deceased dogs found in the trash outside. Most appeared to have been recently deceased, UWK was told.
All of the rescued dogs are currently being cared for by the two rescues, and Iberville Parish Animal Control.
The investigation is ongoing, St. Gabriel Police reports.
