COVINGTON — The St. Tammany Parish Office’s second in command has stepped down from his position. This comes just over three weeks after Sheriff Randy Smith was involved in an incident at a Madisonville-area restaurant that left a man injured.
On Tuesday, the STPSO shared that Chief Deputy Jeff Boehm resigned from his position, effective June 22.
In a news release, the department shared that Boehm’s decision comes after careful consideration and “is in the best interest of the agency and the deputies who serve the citizens of St. Tammany Parish each day.”
“It has been an honor to serve alongside the dedicated men and women of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office,” Boehm said. “This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right one for the agency at this time. My priority has always been the success of this organization and the deputies who serve our community every day. I am confident they will continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and service, and I wish the agency nothing but success moving forward.”
The Attorney General’s Office investigated St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith following an incident at a restaurant where Smith is accused of an “unprovoked attack” on another person at the restaurant. After Sheriff Smith turned himself in for arrest on June 4, another person, Gregory Saurage, was identified by investigators as a “participant” in the alleged attack. He turned himself in for arrest on June 8.
Sheriff Smith will have a court appearance on June 24.
Sources confirm to UWK that Smith is expected to resign this week and the State Police Colonel, who just announced his retirement, is expected to run for sheriff.
