BATON ROUGE — Scams are sweeping the Capital Region right now, and they have at least two state offices issuing warnings.
The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) posted about fraudulent texts making the rounds on Facebook recently. The OMV said the texts claim to be from The Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles, and reminds everyone it is the OMV, not DMV.
To avoid being scammed, the OMV says:
- Don’t click any links or provide any personal information.
- Use the ‘report junk’ or ‘report spam’ feature on your phone.
- Delete the message immediately.
Secretary of State Scam
The Louisiana Secretary of State, Nancy Landry, also put out a similar warning about a scam her office is seeing right now. According to a Facebook post, there’s a fraudulent text message scam aiming to steal personal information and potentially charge unnecessary fees.
The post says some residents have gotten messages claiming to be from the Secretary of State’s office. The texts use language similar to the OMV scam texts. These messages are not coming from Landry’s office, and she encourages anyone who gets one not to click any links, respond, or send payment.
The Secretary of State’s office does not send unsolicited text messages or emails threatening prosecution or asking for payment.
