HAMMOND —- Louisiana State Police troopers are investigating a deputy-involved shooting that left Timothy Douglas, 48, of Ponchatoula, dead.
It happened on December 21, 2024, around 11:55 p.m. on South Baptist Road near Hwy 190 in Hammond, in Tangipahoa Parish.
Troopers say a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a reportedly stolen Saturn Vue. Douglas was driving that vehicle. Troopers say Douglas fled, leading to a pursuit that ended at an apartment complex off South Baptist Road in Hammond. Officials say Douglas ending up exiting and fleeing on foot.
A deputy followed Douglas and deployed his taser. When the deputy was trying to arrest Douglas, there was a fight because Douglas allegedly fought arrest. The two got into a fight and that’s when the deputy fired his service weapon, hitting Douglas.
Douglas was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
State Police says they found a gun on Douglas.
Per procedure, State Police was called in after the fact to investigate the deputy-involved shooting so the agency is not investigating itself and to avoid any conflicts.
“This is an unfortunate situation at a truly tragic time,” said Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Gerald Sticker. “We have turned to State Police to lead this investigation. Our agency is following all appropriate protocols and policies and I want the community to know TPSO, in collaboration with State Police, will be sharing all of the details about this incident, at the appropriate time, as they become available throughout the investigative process.”
No further details have been released at this time into the deadly shooting.
