NEW ROADS — A 45-year-old New Roads man, who an officer shot in September, is now behind bars and charged with aggravated assault on an officer.
It was Sept. 19, 2025 when a New Roads Police officer was dispatched to the rear of the O’Reilly’s Auto Parts store on Hospital Road. The call was about about a man, who was possibly damaging property.
When the New Roads officer arrived, he found an individual who matched the description provided by the 911 caller.
“The officer observed the individual was armed with a metal object and was actively causing self-harm. The officer gave multiple verbal commands for the individual to drop the object and attempted to intervene multiple times by less lethal means,” the lead investigating agency, Louisiana State Police said in a news release.
LSP’s Bureau of Investigations said 45-year-old John Sexton allegedly “disregarded the verbal commands and was not responsive to the less lethal intervention. The individual ultimately charged toward the officer, while armed with the metal object, which resulted in the officer discharging his firearm.”
UWK learned the officer did shoot at Sexton multiple times. Sexton was injured and airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries. Since then, he has been released from the hospital.
LSP have since obtained a warrant for his arrest and Sexton was booked into the Pointe Coupee Parish jail on Oct. 1, 2025. He’s charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and resisting a police officer with rorce or violence.
The officer was not injured in the shooting. His name was not released. Per LSP, the officer has now been cleared of any wrongdoing based on their investigation. The completed report will now move from law enforcement to the district attorney’s office. In this particular case, it heads to the 18th JDC, whose district attorney is Tony Clayton. He and his prosecutors will now examine the case to determine their legal steps in the case.
