ST. GEORGE — Fire investigators have determined that a fire at Shenandoah Elementary School on Friday morning was intentionally set by a student in the boys’ bathroom.
The St. George Fire Department responded to the school on Appomattox Avenue around 8:44 a.m. after reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found flames coming from the boys’ bathroom but were able to quickly bring the fire under control.
No injuries were reported, but the fire caused moderate damage to the bathroom. SGFD officials praised the school staff for executing a safe and efficient evacuation.
Investigators confirmed the fire was deliberately set by a student but did not release further details. The student’s name is being withheld due to their age, and no charges have been announced at this time.
“We cannot stress the importance of discussing fire safety with children, from escape planning to the destruction caused by playing with lighters or matches,” St. George Fire Protection District PIO Meg Kling said in a media release Saturday.
